Crochet an Original Wrap Sweater – Or Is It a Scarf with Sleeves?

2024-10-14

Have a wonderful day, everyone!

The first chilly days are here, and whether you’re outside or at home, it’s always nice to wrap up in a soft, cozy scarf or sweater. In today’s tutorial, we’re going to crochet just such a piece—a warm and comfy wrap sweater. Some call it a wrap scarf, a scarf-sweater, or a scarf with sleeves. Personally, I love the name "wrap sweater" and have completely fallen in love with it. I adore how versatile and original it is to wear!

I chose a stretchy ribbed pattern that many of you are already familiar with from my previous projects. Thanks to this, the sweater is beautifully puffy, elastic, and hugs the body wonderfully, keeping you warm. The ribbed pattern is easy to remember, as it only repeats two rows—no complicated counting required. It’s so simple and quick, and you’ll love seeing how fast the sweater comes together!

The sweater is crocheted using Orion and Orion Color yarns. I combined red and black for stripes, and I chose black for the sleeves. The Orion yarn comes in lots of amazing colors, both solid and variegated. I can’t wait to hear which colors you choose and how you like to style your wrap sweater!

The crochet process is easy—we’ll be crocheting a very long rectangle, and once you’re happy with the length of the sweater, we’ll sew it together and finish the sleeves. You can make your wrap sweater longer or shorter—I went for a waist-length version. You can also make the sleeves as long or short as you like.

This wrap sweater is perfect for wearing from fall to spring. The best part is that you can easily adjust it to any size, your personal taste, and style. Even beginners can give it a try! Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Let’s dive into this crochet project together!

CROCHET AN ORIGINAL WRAP SWEATER – OR A SCARF WITH SLEEVES
PATTERN NOTES

1) Before you start take a measurement, I would recommend to determine the width of your wrap sweater. If you want to have your sweater wider, make a longer foundation chain at the beginning. If you want to have your sweater narrower, make a shorter foundation chain.

2) This pattern is for MEDIUM/SMALL women size, but you can easily adapt to a smaller size or bigger size just by reducing or increasing the number of chains and rows for the Wrap Sweater and as well as making less or more chains in the basic chain.

3) The sweater is crocheted as a simple rectangle, back and forth in rows. While crocheting, you can test how the width will fit you and how long the sleeves will be - and crochet the required number of rows accordingly.

4) The instructions use extended half double crochet stitch, single crochet, slip stitch and chains. The pattern is repeated after 2 rows.

5) A ch2 / a ch1 at beg of the row/round DOESN'T COUNT as a stitch.

6) The Sweater is worked in 2 basic pieces:
A) body of wrap sweater / rectangle
B) sleeves - rectangle

7) The WRAP SWEATER measures:
length: 40 cm / 15.6 inch
width: 230 cm / 90 inch

sleeve
length: 35 cm / 13.5 inch
width: 30 cm / 12 inch
*Measurements are taken from the garment lying flat, before the yarn has stretched out/dropped.

SLEEVES

Fold the rectangle along its longer side.
Sew or crochet the edges together, stitch by stitch, starting from the end.
This stitching forms a "tunnel," which creates a short sleeve.
Join the ends of the rectangle on each side, about 20–25 cm.
I used slip stitches and extended half double crochets (ehdc) to crochet along the sides of the sleeve, making a total of 24 ehdc.
This will form the tunnels at the ends.

Crochet a single crochet border around the edges.
Re-join the new yarn and crochet an even single crochet edge all the way around.
I crocheted a total of 34 single crochets around.
End the row with a slip stitch in the first stitch.
Do not cut the yarn—we’ll continue with the sleeve next.

Make ribbed sleeves:
Make a foundation chain 40 chains.
If you want a shorter or longer sleeve, crochet a shorter or longer chain.

R1: ch1, 1sc in 2nd ch from crochet hook,1sc in each ch, sl st in next sc, where you started the foundation chain, sl st in next st, turn (40 sc + 2 sl st)

R2: skip 2 sl st, 1sl st in next 40 sc BLO till end of row, turn (40 sl st)

R3: ch1, 1sc in next 40 sl st BLO, sl st in next 2 sc on the edge of the sweater, turn (40 sc + 2 sl st)

R4 – R34: repeat rows R2 and R3. Make 34 rows.

Join the crocheted parts by slip stitching them together.
Once joined, cut the yarn and fasten off.
Repeat the same process to crochet the sleeve on the opposite side.
Finally, weave in all the yarn ends and fasten off.
