Crochet 4 SQUARES Rainbow Mandala Poncho

2022-05-08
Hello my crochet friends!

I love to crochet and wear ponchos all the time, they are perfect for almost any season and for all kinds of occasions.

This crochet RAINBOW PONCHO with wonderful colorful design is made up of 4 squares. In this my new design, the square begins as a circle - flower, so there is a beautiful flower mandala design in the center of each square. This design incorporates both open and dense stitches. This makes the poncho warm and gives it a great drape, while also giving you a little bit of airflow.

PATTERN NOTES
1) Before you start take a measurement of height of your body and a body measurement (please see the final measurement of the poncho below).
2) This pattern is for GIRLS /XS size, but you can easily adapt to a smaller size or bigger size just by making the squares bigger or smaller.
Make the square bigger or smaller just by reducing or increasing the number of rows.

R14 and R15 = repeat R12 and R13

If you want a bigger poncho repeat R12 and R13 until desired measurements.

Join squares
Place 4 squares like this.

img_0908.jpeg

With your yarn and hook you will now join the squares together, making sure they are right sides together.
Remember not to make your stitches too tight and not too loose.

Start in the right corner of the front square and work from bottom to neck edge.
Start in corner ch3sp (between 2 2tr clusters): 1 sl st to move into the corner, 1 sl st to join front square (1) and right shoulder square (2).
Then: ch1, sk one ch, 1sl st on top of both 2tr cluster (on both squares 1 and 2)
ch2, sk ch1sp, 1sl st in next st,
Repeat: *ch2, skip 1dc on opposite square, place 1sl st on next st on this opposite square,
ch2, skip 1dc on first square, place 1sl st on next st on this first square*
repeat from * to * till you reach the end, the corners.
Join corners:
sk last 1ch sp, 1sl st on top of 2tr cluster on both squares, sl st in next st

Once you have assembled 1 (front square) and 2 (right shoulder square) squares together and it is time to repeat the same for 1 (front square) and 3 (left shoulder square), putting right sides together and repeat the instruction above to crochet the squares together.

Making sure that when you are done your work will be joined and lay out like the pic above.

img_1110.jpeg

Now it is time to turn these 3 squares into your poncho by adding the 4th square (back square)
Keeping your work right side facing you, you will take and fold in half square 2 (right shoulder) and 3 (left shoulder).

You will crochet the same as you did for the other squares assembling 3 with 4 and 2 with 4.

Making sure right sides are facing you, join them the same way you joined the first 3 squares.

Now that your poncho is assembled you will hide all loose tails in the wrong side of your work and turn it right side facing you.

You will now work on the neck opening to make it smaller, if you like the size it is leave it and you are done, but if you want to decrease the opening continue below.

img_0897.jpeg

Make a neck opening:
With the right sides facing you, with your hook and yarn join with a slip knot to the front V corner of the neck opening. Join at the bottom of the V neck = start in the corner
crochet hook 5.0 mm

R1: ch3(1dc), ch1, sk 1dc, 1dc in next st
repeat around till you reach the beg of round, sl st in 3rd ch from beg to close round

R2: ch3 (1dc), skip ch1sp, 1dc in next st
repeat: 1dc in each ch1sp and 1dc in each ds around the neck space till V-corner on the back side: skip ch1sp before the middle st, 1dc in middle st, skip ch1sp, 1dc in next st.
repeat: 1d in each ch1sp and 1dc in each ds around till you reach the beg of round, skip last ch1sp, sl st in 3rd ch from beg to close round

Repeat round 1 and 2 for as many rounds as you like I did mine with 2 rounds only.

img_1093--1-.jpeg
Make an edge around the bottom of poncho:
With the right sides facing you, with your hook and yarn join with a slip knot to any stich of your last row of square. Work a finishing edge around the bottom of poncho.
crochet hook 5.0 mm
Repeat R12 and R13.

R1: *Work 1 dc in first/next st, ch1, skip 1st* repeat from * to * around the entire poncho but where 2 squares meet and where there are 2tr-clusters, work 1dc on top of 2tr-cluster, ch1, skip ch1sp, work 1dc in join of squares, ch1, skip ch1sp and work 1dc on top of 2tr cluster.
Work corner stitch in each corner stitch as always.

R2: Work 1 dc in each st around the entire poncho
Work corner stitch in each corner stitch as always.
img_0911.jpeg

Add 2 or more rows

Fasten off, hide all loose tails in the back of your work and you are all done my friends.
