Crochet Happy Octopus Amigurumi toy for fun
Hello My Crochet Friends!
Today, I have a crochet tutorial for a happy octopus amigurumi toy. I've been crocheting these octopuses for many years, but I hadn't yet prepared instructions for them. However, knowing that octopuses bring joy to everyone, from babies to older children, and even teenagers, I'm sharing the instructions with you now.
Crocheting octopuses is quite easy; they consist of two parts crocheted together. One part is the head and body, and the other part is the bottom with the tentacles. You can personalize your octopus by adding details like hearts, stars, caps, hats, headbands, or crowns.
I embroider the eyes to ensure the octopuses are safe for small babies, but for older children, you can use plastic safety eyes.
I enjoy crocheting tentacles of different lengths, twists, and colors, and I'll explain everything in the video tutorial so you can choose the style you prefer. I like to add a short frilly skirt around the octopus for extra charm.
Because these cute crocheted octopuses can be made quickly, they make wonderful toys for children in hospitals, maternity wards, doctor's offices, or children's corners, bringing joy as thoughtful gifts.
Crochet octopus toys are also used to comfort preemies in the NICU, helping them regulate their breathing and providing something to grasp onto instead of their tubes and equipment. It's amazing what a little crocheting can do!
Crocheting these octopuses is easy, and I believe even beginners can do it. You can choose colors that complement each other, use leftover cotton yarns, or any yarns you prefer for crocheting toys.
Enjoy selecting colors, crocheting, and giving joy to your loved ones!

A crochet decrease makes the current row or round that you are working on shorter than the one previous to it.
1. Insert hook into the first stitch.
2. Yarn over and draw through the loop.
3. Do not complete the stitch as normal.
4. Instead, insert the hook into the next stitch.
5. Yarn over and draw through the loop.
6. There should now be three loops on your hook
7. Yarn over and draw through all three loops on the hook
8. You should now have two single crochet stitches side-by-side, joined together into one stitch at the top.
This pattern requires familiarity with stitches used, attaching yarn, sewing parts together with a sewing needle.

PATTERN NOTES
1) A ch1 at beg of the row DOESN'T count as a stitch
2) Magic ring = the starting point for crocheting in a spiral. Use which ever method you prefer.
3) Continuous rounds - HEAD + BODY and BOTTOM PART are worked up in continuous rounds, which means that you will not be joining the last stitch of the round with the first one. Instead you will need to keep track of where each round started and how many stitches you have made because after each round you will continue right on to the stitches of the next round (with no join). It is useful to use a stitch marker or piece of yarn to mark the start or end of each round.
4) ( ) – The number of stitches that should be in a completed round/row are placed in brackets at the end of that round’s/row’s instructions.
5) This CROCHET HAPPY OCTOPUS AMIGURUMI TOY measures:
length: 10 cm / 4 inch
tentacles length: 8 - 12 cm / 3 - 4.7 inch
width: 8 cm / 3.1 inch
The finished size will depend on what yarn you use, as well as your tension and hook (as with any amigurumi).
6) You can make the CROCHET HAPPY OCTOPUS AMIGURUMI TOY bigger with a thicker yarn or a larger hook size.
7) There is some tips:
Use stitch markers to keep track of your rounds.
The crocheted octopus amigurumi are worked in the round. Using stitch markers is an easy way to keep track of your rounds while you work, without having to think too hard about which round you’re on!
Stuff your octopus firmly, but not too tightly.
When stuffing your amigurumi octopus, use enough stuffing so that it’s not saggy, but avoid using too much. It’s easy to overstuff your octopus, leading to a toy that’s more stiff than cuddly.
Sew the parts together securely.
When piecing your octopus together, be sure to take the time to stitch securely. If you’re giving your octopus as a gift to a little one, keep in mind that babies and kids are not always gentle with stuffed toys. It’s best to sew a little bit more securely than you think is necessary in order to avoid losing tentacles or other pieces of your octopus.
Embroider the eyes on your octopus for small children.
While safety eyes sound safe, they can easily be a choking hazard if they’re pulled off or fall off your amigurumi. If your amigurumi octopus will be going to a home that has children aged 3 or under, it’s safest to embroider the eyes instead.

Stuff the BODY well. Don't cut the yarn.
STUFFING
The exact moment for starting filling and stuffing the toy depends on every single person. I prefer filling the toy with the work almost finished. It’s a bit more difficult to fill, but more comfortable to crochet. You should make proofs until finding the more suitable moment of filling for you.
Stuff head and body firmly and full. Shape as you stuff, make sure to shape the nose too.
Use a stuffing stick or the back end of a pencil to push the stuffing into the right spots.
BOTTOM PART
Color B
Crochet hook 3.5 mm.
A ch1 at beg of the row DOESN'T count as a stitch
This part is worked in spiral rounds, without joining rounds. Do not join rounds.
Make a magic ring

R5: *1sc in next 3 st, 2sc in next st * repeat from * to * till end of round (30 sc)
Cut yarn and fasten off and wave all ends in.
TENTACLES
Color A, B and C
You can crochet tentacles in different colors and lengths, you can choose whether they will be more or less twisted.
I crocheted the tentacles as follows:
3 long tentacles: ch48, ch1 and turn, repeat: (1sc in next ch, 2sc in next ch, 1sc in next ch, 3sc in next ch)
3 longer tentacles: ch40, ch1 and turn, repeat: (1sc in next ch, 2sc in next ch)
2 shorter tentacles: ch36, ch1 and turn, repeat: (1sc in next ch, 3sc in next ch)
You can either sew the tentacles or just always join them with slip stitches to the bottom part of the body.
FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
Join the head and body together with single crochet stitches.
Make sure the head and the body is stuffed well before sewing, but not so firm that you can see the stuffing through the stitches. Work around the entire round.
Insert the hook into the stitch on part A and straight into the post on part B and crochet a single crochet. Work 1sc in each st around, join stitch to stitch.
A total of 30 single crochet stitches. Close the round with a slip stitch.
Next, let's crochet the "skirt", repeat all around: *1sl st in next st, 5dc in next st, 1sl st in next st, a total of 10 ruffles / loops, finish the row with a slip stitch.
Cut the yarn. Hide the yarn tails inside the body.
You can sew ornaments such as stars, a heart, a flower and so on onto the head.
I embroidered the eyes with black, thinner yarn, like closed eyes with eyelashes (the girl's octopus has eyelashes a little longer than the boy's).
Hide the yarn tails inside the body.
And voila! You made a HAPPY OCTOPUS AMIGURUMI TOY!
Crochet octopus patterns are not only fun to make, but they’re also fairly quick projects that babies absolutely love! Could be a perfect gift for your love ones. It will surely bring smile to all your recipient’s faces.
