Crochet Navy Summer Star stitch Top with Cups
Hello my dear friends! Hope you have a nice summer day!
This article follows on from the article about crocheting classic shaped cups for a summer top or tank top.
Navy style belongs to summer and that is why I chose colors in combination with blue and white. I chose a beautiful romantic star stitch for the light blue stripes, which softened the top beautifully.
In the instructions, I will show you how to crochet the cups, finish the bottom part and crochet the stripes. The stripes are classic, not for tying. It is of course up to you whether you sew the stripes or perhaps tie them around the neck, as suits you. And so that the top sits nicely on the body, it has a button fastening at the back. You can crochet the top longer or shorter, or just as a bikini top.
The top is great for summer days, vacations by the water, or holiday festivals! I hope the tutorial is here in time for you to enjoy your summer in nautical style.
Of course, you can make the top in many other color variants or even in one color, according to your taste!

How to Star Stitch Crochet
The secret to star stitch is just to learn where to insert your hook each time.
Otherwise, you are just simply wrapping your yarn over and pulling through, plus a bit of half double crochet!
Each row of ‘stars’ is separated by a row of half double crochets.
It has a right side and a wrong side, so is not really ideal for things that need a reversible pattern.
Crochet star stitch has an attractive and beautiful texture suitable for projects where you need a dense stitch.
Step 1: Foundation For Star Stitch Pattern
Make your foundation chain. You will need an odd number of stitches.
Insert your hook into the 2nd chain from the hook.
Yo, and pull up as though you are going to make a sc. (2 loops on hook.)
Leave that loop on the hook. (Do not finish the stitch.)
Step 2: First Stitch
Insert hook into next ch, yo, pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook.)
Keep doing this, into a subsequent ch each time, until you have 6 loops on your hook.
Keep your tension loose for this step!
Step 3:
When you have the 6 loops on the hook, yo again and pull through all 6 loops.
These loops make the points of the star.
Step 4:
Ch 2.
You created a little hole in the center of your star. This hole is called the ‘eye’ of the stitch. You will continue working into this eye.
Step 5:
Insert your hook into the eye that you have just made.
YO, pull up a loop. (2 loops on hook.)
Step 6:
Insert the hook into the last loop of your first star.
Yo, and pull through. (3 loops on hook.)
Step 7:
Insert your hook into the next ch on your foundation ch. Yo, pull through. (4 loops.)
Now insert hook into next ch along, yo, pull through.
Repeat again so that you have 6 loops on the hook.
Step 8:
Yo and pull through all 6 loops on hook.
Ch2 to close this star.
Crocheting Star Stitch
Step 7 and 8 - Crocheting Star Stitch
Continue following these steps all the way across your foundation ch. When you reach the last st, make 1 hdc. This finishes the row off neatly. Remember to keep working loosely!
Step 9:
Turn your work, ch2, and work 3hdc into the eye of the star directly below your hook.
You will need to work 3hdc into the eye of each star along the row.
Make 1hdc in the last st and turn.
STEP 10: NEXT STAR ROW
Turn and ch 3.
Insert your hook into the second ch from the hook.
Yo, and pull through. (2loops.)
Insert into next st, yo, pull through. (3 loops.)
Insert hook into each of next 3 st, yo and pull through each time. (6 loops.)
Yo, pull through all 6 loops
Ch2 to close star.
You can see that are repeating exactly the same steps as in your first row of stars, but working into hdc this time, instead of ch sts.
Continue working stars in this way, all across your piece, then hdc into last st.
Turn and ch2
Repeat row of hdc.
Your star sts will be on the odd rows, the hdc on the even rows.
The odd rows are the ‘right’ side of your work.

PATTERN NOTES
1) Before you start take a measurement, I would recommend to determine the width of your top. If you want to have your top wider, make a longer foundation chain on sides. If you want to have your top narrower, make a shorter foundation chain on sides.
2) This pattern is for XS women size, but you can easily adapt to a smaller size or bigger size just by reducing or increasing the number of chains and rows for the top and as well as making less or more chains in the basic chain.
3) A ch1 at beg of the row DOESN'T COUNT as a stitch.
4) A ch2 at beg of the row/round DOESN'T COUNT as a stitch.
5) The TOP measures:
Stripe length: 33 cm / 13 inch
Stripe width: 2.5 cm / 1 inch
Height of shoulder Stripe on the front: 9 cm / 3.5 inch
Height of the cup with the stripe on the front: 24 cm / 9.4 inch
Width of the cup with the star st border: 17 cm / 6.5 inch
Bottom part height: 15 cm / 6 inch
Bottom part width: 36.5 cm / 14 inch
Back part:
Width from side to stripe: 8 cm / 3 inch
Width between stripes (when top is buttoned up): 13 cm / 5 inches
*Measurements are taken from the garment lying flat, before the yarn has stretched out/dropped.
5) The TOP is worked in 3 basic pieces:
C) Stripes
